Gilgo Beach suspect Rex Heuermann charged in 2 more murders, alleged crimes now date back to 1993
Gilgo Beach suspect Rex Heuermann has been charged with two additional murders and is now accused of killing six women dating as far back as 1993, according to a court document unsealed Thursday. Heuermann is accused of the 2003 murder of Jessica Taylor, whose remains were found on Long Island in Gilgo Beach and in Manorville, and accused of the 1993 murder of Sandra Costilla, whose remains were found in North Sea, Long Island, in 1993, according to court documents.

Judge to consider if ex-Trump adviser Steve Bannon should begin prison sentence
A federal judge will consider the Department of Justice's request to have former Trump adviser Steve Bannon begin his four-month prison term in connection with his contempt of Congress conviction. U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols is scheduled to hear arguments today in Washington, D.C. Bannon was sentenced to four months for contempt of Congress in October 2022 after he was found guilty of defying a subpoena from the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, but Judge Nichols agreed to postpone the jail term while Bannon appealed the conviction.

Family speaks out after giraffe picks up toddler in heart-stopping video
A couple from Texas experienced a shocking incident during their visit to a wildlife center when a giraffe picked up their toddler during a safari drive-thru. Over the weekend, the family visited Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, where the visitors are allowed to drive themselves through a path to get a closer look at and to feed the wildlife. Paisley Toten, 2, was sitting at the back of her family's truck with her mom, feeding the giraffe, when the animal grabbed her by the shirt and lifted her into the air.

President Joe Biden was adamant that U.S. weapons would not be used to strike Moscow or the Kremlin after he authorized Ukraine to use them in Russia during an exclusive interview with ABC News anchor David Muir at the Normandy American Cemetery on the 80th anniversary of D-Day. Muir asked Biden if U.S.-made weapons have already been used in Russia since he signed off on their use, limiting use to areas near the Russian-occupied Kharkiv region.

Tim Scott working with PAC to bring Black, Hispanic voters to Trump
Scott, who suspended his GOP presidential campaign last November, announced the campaign from the Great Opportunity PAC, a conservative super PAC that was formed in December 2023. Although Scott promised $14 million in the initiative, the PAC currently has about $50,000 in its bank account, according to its most current FEC filing. A representative for Scott did not immediately return ABC News' request for comment regarding the funds.

2 possible tornadoes touch down in Maryland amid severe weather in several counties
At least two likely tornadoes touched down in Montgomery County, Maryland, on Wednesday night, weather officials said. Several counties in Maryland had been under tornado warnings for the evening, with damage from the storms already reported in the same county. The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for central Montgomery County Wednesday evening after a confirmed tornado was located near Poolesville, Maryland -- about 20 miles northwest of Washington, D.C.

1st tribally affiliated medical school in US graduates inaugural class of doctors
Mackenzee Thompson says she is familiar with being the "first." This year, the 26-year-old enrolled member of Choctaw Nation became the first doctor in her family, graduating from the inaugural class of the first tribally affiliated medical school in the country. The Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine held its commencement ceremony on May 16 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and the first graduating class from the new campus at the Cherokee Nation was an integral part of it.

4 firefighters injured battling 60-acre wildfire in Napa County, Cal Fire says
Four firefighters were injured Wednesday while battling a 60-acre wildfire in Napa County, California, officials said. The Crystal Fire, which was burning amid high heat, was about 65% contained by the evening, officials with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said. The four firefighters were being treated at local hospitals for injuries "related to response in the steep, rocky terrain and hot summer conditions," fire officials said.

This year's World Environment Day comes with a sobering reminder about the severity of global warming, according to climate experts. 1st fatal human case of bird flu subtype confirmed in Mexico: WHO
It is the first laboratory-confirmed human case of the H5N2 strain of bird flu, or avian influenza, reported globally and the first-ever reported case in Mexico. This strain is different than the bird flu strain that is currently circulating in livestock in the United States and has infected three dairy workers in the U.S.

Flamingo spotted in Massachusetts in potentially unprecedented event

Russian-Ukrainian man arrested following explosion near Paris in suspected terrorism conspiracy: Officials
A Russian-Ukrainian national suspected of being involved in a terrorist conspiracy was taken into custody after being injured in an explosion in France earlier this week, officials announced Wednesday. The 26-year-old man was "picked up by firefighters in a hotel near Paris for severe burns following an explosion," the French National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor's Office (PNAT) said in a statement. Initial findings at the scene "led to the discovery of products and materials intended for the manufacture of explosive devices," PNAT said.

Georgia court halts Trump's election case in Fulton County pending resolution of Fani Willis ruling appeal
A Georgia court of appeals has halted Donald Trump's criminal case in Fulton County pending resolution of an appeal of the disqualification ruling that allowed District Attorney Fani Willis to stay on the case. "The proceedings below in the Superior Court of Fulton County are hereby stayed pending the outcome of these appeals," the order states, as it relates to the eight defendants who appealed the order. The Fulton County District Attorney's office declined to comment on Wednesday's development.

Senate GOP blocks contraceptive access bill as Democrats force election-year vote
The Senate on Wednesday failed to advance legislation that would codify the right to access contraceptives nationwide, as Democrats look to put reproductive care at the front of their messaging agenda in the lead up to the November elections. The Right to Contraception Act fell short of the 60 votes needed to move forward. The final vote was 51-39.

Defense Secretary Austin's chief of staff steps down
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin's chief of staff is stepping down, the Pentagon announced Wednesday, five months after Austin and his top aide faced blowback for not telling the White House that he was in the hospital for treatment of prostate cancer. Officials told reporters that Kelly Magsamen's resignation had nothing to do with the hospitalization scandal in January, which remains under review by the Defense Department inspector general. A separate internal review led by Austin's office concluded there was no indication of "ill intent or an attempt to obfuscate" the situation and did not assign blame, essentially clearing Magsamen, who upon learning of Austin's medical condition was home sick with the flu.
